How to Change a Sprinkler Valve Diaphragm

2012-07-18

Instructions

    • 1

Open the main control box for the sprinkler and turn the system to the "Off" position. In some models, the system may be labeled "Rain" rather than "Off."

    • 2

Shut off the water supply to the sprinkler at the sprinkler emergency shutoff valve. This valve is in the ground and can be located by looking for a square plastic cover on the lawn near the road. Open the cover by prying up on it with a screwdriver to access the shutoff valve.

    • 3

Unscrew the top of the sprinkler, which is called the solenoid, counterclockwise until it comes off of the sprinkler. The solenoid has two wires that protrude from the top of it.

    • 4

Grasp the top of the sprinkler and turn it counterclockwise to remove the bonnet. Some models have screws, rather than a bonnet, which must be removed with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Locate the diaphragm, which should now be sitting on the top of the sprinkler. The diaphragm is a small, concave, rubber device that has a hole in its center. If you do not see the diaphragm, check the underside of the bonnet to see if it is stuck inside.

    • 6

Remove the old diaphragm, making sure to take note of its positioning. Insert the new diaphragm in the same position as the old diaphragm.

    • 7

Reassemble the sprinkler head by reversing the steps taken to disassemble it.

    • 8

Turn the water supply to the sprinkler back on and then turn the sprinkler system settings back on.
