Troubleshooting a Sprinkler Diaphragm Valve

2012-08-01

Water Does Not Turn Off

DIAPHRAGM VALVES You will find that if the water does not shut off for your sprinkler, then there are a few different things that could be causing this. You will first want to check to see if the diaphragm is blocked. The best and easiest way for you to do this is to unscrew the bonnet screws. Completely remove the bonnet as well as the cap that goes over the diaphragm. Take a good look at the filter. You may just need to clean it and replace the diaphragm. However, you may need to also replace the filter. If it looks as though it is something that you can easily clean, then try this before attempting to replace it.

Water Leaks

If you turn the sprinkler off and notice that water is still leaking, then you will need to get back to the diaphragm. You should first flush out the valve. In order to do this, you will need to open up the bleed screw manually. Remove any dirt that may be trapped in the diaphragm. A lot of the time, if there is a lot of debris and dirt that is trapped inside of the diaphragm, water cannot pass through it properly. Whenever this happens, cleaning the diaphragm is usually the first thing to do, as it is the most common and the least expensive, not to mention easiest method.

Other Issues

There are a few other things that you should be on the lookout for with your sprinkler. For instance, if the valve does not turn off electronically, then this could be an issue with the control unit. Check to see if it has any power going to it. There may be a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker that simply needs to be replaced. You may also need to rest the breaker. The control unit could also be improperly programmed to the actual valve and, therefore, cannot control it. This will take a simple reprogramming. If there is a light flow that goes through the valve, then you will need to check out the water supply. If the pressure of it is as high as it should be, then the water pressure from the source will simply need to be increased. There may also be too many sprinkle heads. This could cause there to be a small amount of pressure. If this is the case, then you will need to simply remove the sprinkler heads. When any of the aforementioned things go wrong, it is always a good idea to also check the state of the diaphragm and make sure that it is completely clean and free of dirt and debris.
