The current forecast for Georgetown from the National Weather Service predicts a high of 34 degrees today and 55 degrees on Saturday. As temperatures climb above freezing for the first time in three days, frozen water pipes that have cracked will begin leaking.

These pipes may be for fire sprinkler systems in attics, water lines in non-insulated exterior walls or foundation, or pipes connected to exterior spigots.

If you have a cracked and leaking pipe or fixture, the first thing you need to do is to shut off the water supply. In most homes and businesses, the shutoff will be near the water meter and between the meter and your home or business. In many newer homes, the water meter and shutoff valve is in a box in the ground in the front yard near the street. You may need a wrench or a pair of pliers to turn the valve(gate valve) to the
